Two teenagers were killed in a car accident in our small town. Since they were best friends, their parents had a joint wake and funeral service. Over 1,000 people attended, waiting as long as three hours to greet the family at the visitation.
One man stood by himself in the line and finally reached the front. He spoke to the bereaved family members: “I didn’t know your children, and I have never met you. But I came here tonight because I had a son who died two years ago. I know how this feels. In the time ahead, you will go through every emotion you can imagine. I just want you to know I’m here for you, if you ever need to talk.” He pressed his card into their hands and walked away. He gave three hours of his time and kindness to people he didn’t even know, because he wanted to help them get through the most tragic experience of their lives.*
The kindness that we show to people makes a difference. The kindness that we show to them in Christ’s name can make an eternal difference.
“Ask yourself what you want people to do for you; then grab the initiative and do it for them” (Luke 6:31, The Message)! This kind of love is never wasted!
